Zemirah Leonard of Hampton High School is winner of the 3rd District Congressional Art Competition

 

Zemirah Leonard, a junior at Hampton High School, is the first place winner of the 3rd district Congressional art competition. Zemirah was recognized by Congressman Bobby Scott on May 26, 2022, at the Downing-Gross Cultural Art Center. Her artwork is entitled Fredrick Douglas. Her teacher is Margaret McFarland.

Each spring, a nationwide high school visual art competition is sponsored by the Congressional Institute to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since 1982 when the Artistic Discovery competition began, more than 650,000 high school students have participated. Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries. Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. The winning works are displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol and also featured on the House.gov Congressional Art Competition page.

Along with other prizes, Zemirah also received a scholarship and will travel to Washington, D.C. to attend a Congressional Reception to honor all the winners from around the nation. Her winning entry will also be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel in the United States Capitol Building for an entire year, where it will be seen by hundreds of thousands of people who visit the Capitol.
