A head start on college: HCS students complete Summer College Experience
Hampton City Schools proudly announces the successful completion of its 2026 Summer College Experience, a dual enrollment program offered in partnership with Virginia Peninsula Community College (VPCC). This summer, 13 rising sophomores successfully completed the rigorous 14-day program, earning three college credits while gaining valuable firsthand experience in a college learning environment.
The Summer College Experience is a selective program designed to provide academically promising students with an early college opportunity. Students are nominated by their Freshman Academy executive principals based on their academic achievement, motivation, critical thinking skills, adaptability, and demonstrated potential for success.
Held from June 24 through July 23, 2026, on the Virginia Peninsula Community College campus, the program combined engaging classroom instruction, hands-on learning experiences, educational field experiences, and access to college resources. The program was provided at no cost to participating families and included tuition, textbooks, meals, transportation, and all required course materials.
“We are incredibly proud of these students and all they have accomplished,” said Dr. Sean Callender, director of secondary school leadership for Hampton City Schools. “Their successful completion of college coursework before beginning their sophomore year demonstrates both their determination and their potential. Through partnerships like the one we share with Virginia Peninsula Community College, Hampton City Schools continues to expand meaningful opportunities that prepare students for college, careers, and lifelong success.”
The Summer College Experience reflects Hampton City Schools' commitment to providing equitable access to rigorous academic opportunities that inspire students to achieve at the highest levels. By introducing students to the expectations and culture of higher education early in their high school journey, the program helps build confidence, strengthen academic skills, and create pathways to future college and career success.
