Kecoughtan student journalists gain real-world experience at JCamp

Five student journalists from Kecoughtan High School recently spent four days at James Madison University sharpening their reporting, interviewing, and photography abilities during JCamp, the annual journalism camp sponsored by the Virginia Association of Journalism Teachers & Advisers (VAJTA).

The camp brought together aspiring journalists from across Virginia to learn from experienced media professionals while practicing their craft in a real-world setting. Students participated in hands-on workshops covering newswriting, interviewing, and photography before heading into the Harrisonburg community to report on local stories. They also toured James Madison University’s professional television studio, gaining firsthand insight into careers in broadcast journalism and multimedia production. Their completed articles and photographs were published on the VAJTA web site, giving students the opportunity to see their work shared with a statewide audience. 

Beyond strengthening their journalism abilities, students developed valuable real-world competencies including effective communication, critical thinking, problem solving, meeting deadlines, and professional interviewing, which will benefit them in college and future careers. 

“It was inspiring to see my students take on the challenging role of professional journalists by interviewing and taking photos in the Harrisonburg community,” said Jessica Hanthorn, yearbook adviser at Kecoughtan. “The experience will not only improve the quality of our yearbook but also give the students the opportunity to develop as leaders.”

Four of the participants have completed Journalism & Yearbook I at Kecoughtan and will continue their journalism education in Journalism & Yearbook II next school year. Madelynn Boyce has completed Journalism & Yearbook II and will advance to Journalism & Yearbook III. Each student played an important role in producing Kecoughtan High School’s yearbook this past year and is expected to serve in a student leadership role as an editor during the upcoming school year.

The students were accompanied by Jessica Hanthorn, English teacher and Kecoughtan High School yearbook adviser.
