Hampton City Schools students complete Dual Enrollment Summer College Experience at Virginia Peninsula Community College

Hampton City Schools proudly announces the successful completion of the 2025 Summer College Experience, a dual enrollment program in partnership with Virginia Peninsula Community College (VPCC). This year, 19 rising sophomores participated in the rigorous 13-day program, earning three college credits while gaining firsthand exposure to the research and field experience in Oceanography all the while in a college environment.

The Summer College Experience is a selective program that invites academically promising students from each high school’s Freshman Academy. Nominated by the executive principals, participants are chosen based on their motivation, critical thinking skills, adaptability, and early signs of academic excellence.

The program was held from June 25 to July 24, 2025. It took place on the VPCC campus and featured engaging, hands-on instruction, off-site field learning experiences, and access to campus resources. The initiative was provided at no cost to families and included meals, transportation, and all course materials.

“We are incredibly proud of these students,” said Dr. Sean Callender, director of secondary school leadership of Hampton City Schools. “Their participation not only reflects their dedication and potential, but also our division’s commitment to expanding college and career readiness through meaningful partnerships.”

The Summer College Experience continues to be a cornerstone of Hampton City Schools’ mission to ensure all students graduate prepared for success in postsecondary education, the workforce, and life.
