2023 graduating seniors receive scholarships through the Hampton Education Foundation
The Hampton Education Foundation celebrated this year's scholarship recipients on June 1, 2023. Four Hampton City Schools graduates received the Michael Canty Memorial Scholarship in recognition of Dr. Michael "Mike" Canty. Canty had a special place in his heart for those who may have struggled more than most, but who nevertheless find success. This year's recipients were: Jada Batten (Kecoughtan High School) attending Virginia Tech for fashion merchandising and design, Kameron Mallory (Hampton High School) attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for biology/pre-med, Frederic Ramirez Melenciano (Phoebus High School) attending the University of Virginia for aerospace engineering, and Ken Nyah Wiggins (Bethel High School) attending Winston-Salem State University for social work.
Earlier this year, the Elizabeth “Betty” Marshall Education Enhancement Fund was established in honor of Elizabeth “Betty” Marshall, to provide a scholarship to a graduating senior to pursue further study or training at an accredited two year or four-year institution, seeking a career in teaching. Betty was a teacher in Hampton City Schools from 1974-2004, and then for 10 more years at the Cathedral School for Boys in San Francisco. Specifically, Betty was an extremely dedicated teacher and was especially effective with the Alternative Education Program. This scholarship is in appreciation of all she did to help students throughout her career in teaching and was given by Christopher (PHS Class of '91) and Candace Williamson. This year's inaugural recipient was Trinity Blevins (Bethel High School), who will be attending Virginia Commonwealth University.
The Hampton Education Foundation strives to raise new scholarships each year to provide Hampton City Schools graduating seniors the optimal funding to pursue post-secondary education. Please contact hef-director@hampton.k12.va.us if you are interested in speaking with someone regarding establishing a new scholarship.
Congratulations to each of the scholarship recipients as they embark on their college careers.
