Hampton City Schools announces assistant principal/academy principal new hires and changes

 

Hampton City Schools recently announced the following assistant principal/academy principal new hires and changes for the 2022-2023 school year.

 

Asbury Elementary School

Cheryl Hiers joins the administrative team of Asbury Elementary School. She has served as an assistant principal at Kraft Elementary School since the 2019-2020 school year. Prior to her role as the assistant principal, she served the students, families, and staff at Kraft as their school counselor for five years. She worked as a behavioral counselor with Hampton’s Community Services Board and as a family counselor for a private organization in Norfolk. She was a special education teacher at Kecoughtan High School for three years and a teacher/counselor at Southeastern Public School Consortium (SECEP) in Norfolk.

 

Hiers earned her bachelor’s from Christopher Newport University, her master’s in urban education from Norfolk State University and her Ed.S. from Old Dominion University.

 

Bethel High School

Travis Oliver joins the administrative team for the 2022-2023 school year and will serve as the academy principal for the Academy of Transportation, Analytics, Information and Logistics (TrAIL).

 

Oliver joined Hampton City Schools in 2017 and has served all grade levels as a math teacher at Lindsay Middle School. He has also served in several leadership roles at Lindsay to include being a member of the school leadership team, a 21st century learning coordinator and 21st century STREAM coordinator. Prior to coming to Hampton, he was a middle school math teacher in Greensboro and Henderson, North Carolina. Additionally, he has over a decade of experience serving as a football coach both at the middle school level (two years) and at the collegiate level (nine years).

 

He has a bachelor’s in business management from Hampton University and a master’s in educational leadership from Regent University.

 

Bryan Elementary School

Sara Meier will join the administrative team to support the Bryan Patriots. Meier is coming to Bryan from Forrest Elementary School where she has been serving most recently as a third grade teacher. Prior to third grade, she was a first and second grade teacher, both at Forrest. She has served in several leadership roles at Forrest Elementary to include but not limited to a representative on the School Leadership Team for her grade level, climate and culture coach, and mentor lead.

 

She has her bachelor’s in business administration from Liberty University as well as a minor in leadership from Liberty’s President’s Leadership Program. Meier has also earned a master’s in elementary education and an ED. S. in educational leadership both from Old Dominion University and was a member of the HCS ODU Leadership Cohort.  

 

Hampton High School

The home of the Crabbers welcomes Damien Collins and Elizabeth Goodwyn to their administrative team, both serving as academy principals.

 

Collins joined Hampton City Schools last year and has served as a special education teacher and case manager at Mary S. Peake Elementary School. He also served in several leadership roles at Peake to include being a member of the school communication team, the Cognitive Abilities (CoGat) testing coordinator, and a school representative for the Community Priorities Workshop. Prior to coming to HCS, he was a special education teacher for six years at the Rivermont School in Hampton.  

 

He has a bachelor’s in science from Virginia Commonwealth University, a collegiate professional license in special education from Old Dominion University, and will complete a master’s in urban education and administrative supervision this summer from Norfolk State University.

 

Goodwyn has served as an assistant principal this past year at Lindsay Middle School. Prior to her time at Lindsay, she served as an assistant principal at Jones Magnet Middle School as well as spent 16 years as a science teacher at Cesar Tarrant Middle School.

She earned a bachelor’s degree from Christopher Newport University, a master’s from Grand Canyon University, and an educational specialist degree from Liberty University.

 

Kraft Elementary School

Kraft Elementary School welcomes Michael Kelly to their administrative team. Kelly served as Asbury’s assistant principal this past year. Prior to Asbury, he served as a special education teacher at Smith Elementary School. He began his career in education as a special education teacher in Fairfax County Public Schools. Over his career, he has also served as a school improvement grant instructional coach in St. Louis, an assistant principal in Illinois, and an elementary principal in California.

 

Kelly earned his bachelor’s in music education at the State University of New York and his master’s in special education as well as a master’s in educational leadership at George Mason University.

 

Langley Elementary School

Rasán Holmes will be a Langley Leopard as he joins the administrative team at Langley Elementary School. Holmes is coming to Langley from Phillips Elementary School where he has been serving as a music teacher since 2017. He has served in several leadership roles at Phillips to include a mentor lead teacher, algebra readiness coordinator, building mentor, and a summer learning coordinator. Prior to Phillips, he served Lindsay Middle School students as the director of bands and was an assistant professor at Hampton University.

 

Holmes has his bachelor’s and master’s in education from Hampton University and was a member of the HCS ODU Leadership Cohort earning his ED. S. in educational leadership from Old Dominion University.

 

Phoebus High School

Malachi Wafford has been appointed from interim assistant administrator at Phoebus High School to academy principal. He will continue to support the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism.

 

Wafford began his educational career in Detroit, Michigan teaching fourth through sixth grade before serving as an elementary and middle school teacher and assistant principal in California. He joined Hampton City Schools in 2019 as a fifth grade teacher at Aberdeen and has also served in the leadership roles of the Climate and Culture Coach and Saturday School Coordinator before serving in the role last school year of interim assistant administrator at Phoebus High.

 

He has a bachelor’s degree in education from Western Michigan University and is finishing his master’s degree in educational leadership at Old Dominion University. Additionally, Mr. Wafford is a part of the HCS Leadership Cohort.

 

Smith Elementary School

Lindsay Jackson joins the Smith Elementary administrative team. Jackson is coming to Smith from Mary S. Peake Elementary School where she has been serving as an elementary school teacher since 2016. She has also served in the capacity of Peake’s climate coach and 21st century site coordinator. She began her educational career as an elementary school teacher in 2007 in Kentucky before moving to Virginia and serving elementary school students in two other school divisions before coming to Hampton. In addition, she has served is a VSTE member and presenter and ISTE member and presenter. Ms. Jackson has been a social studies lead teacher and instructional lead teacher and has served as a 21st century STREAM coordinator. 

 

Jackson has her bachelor’s in elementary education from Kentucky State University as well as a master’s in elementary education from Indiana University. In addition, she has a master’s in educational leadership from Old Dominion University and was a member of the HCS ODU Leadership Cohort.
