Syms Students Make a Lasting Impact on Their School and Community

“Clean-ups such as restoration projects are important to keep the Earth healthy and sustainable,” shared sixth grader Ayden Rector — a belief recently put into action by Syms students.

On February 12th, Ayden and 24 fellow students from Syms Spartans in Action and 21st Century partnered with the Hampton Waterways Restoration Project of the Hampton Clean City Commission for a schoolyard cleanup. With the support of staff members Dominique Coleman, Raven Hawkins, Megan Julien, Ann Porter, and Erin Washko, the group demonstrated what can happen when young leaders commit to making a difference.

Despite cold temperatures, the students worked with determination and purpose. In just one hour, they collected 60 pounds of litter — debris that might otherwise have washed into local waterways and harmed the environment. Among the items students discovered was an illegally dumped couch. Hampton Public Works was contacted to ensure the couch was removed and disposed of properly.

Eighth grader Zemira Veasy reflected on the broader importance of their efforts: “Cleanups are not just for appearance, but they help ensure that the city runs smoothly, remains healthy, and continues to be a welcoming place for everyone.”

The students’ work goes far beyond beautifying school grounds. By preventing pollution, protecting waterways, and modeling civic responsibility, these Syms students are strengthening their community and safeguarding the environment for the future. Their leadership reminds us that meaningful change begins with individuals who are willing to take action — even on a cold February day.
