Bethel High School Students Complete Firefighter 1 Burns
On January 18, 2025, the Hampton Division of Fire & Rescue’s Volunteer Firefighter I class completed eight hours of live burn evolutions at the Live Fire Training Facility in Gloucester, VA. Among the recruits were three Bethel High School juniors from the Academy of Law & Public Safety: Shawn Battle, Asher Arsenault, and Landon Norton. Since September, they have dedicated their Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to the program, balancing this rigorous training with their schoolwork.
“I am incredibly proud of our volunteer recruits for their dedication, perseverance, and commitment to serving their community,” shared Bethel executive principal Dr. Tanya Howard. “Balancing rigorous training with academic responsibilities is no small feat, and their hard work exemplifies the values of leadership and service. They are not only preparing for bright futures but also setting an inspiring example for their peers.”
Bethel High School and the Academy of Law & Public Safety provide students with a unique opportunity to join the Fire Division’s volunteer cadre during their junior and senior years. Participants can earn certifications in Firefighter I and II, HAZMAT Awareness & Operations, and Emergency Medical Technician training through the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Students who complete all certifications over the two-year program are eligible for a conditional job offer from the Hampton Division of Fire & Rescue upon graduation.
