Syms teacher Arnetta Hughes publishes her first book

Arnetta Hughes, a business teacher at Syms Middle School, has published her first book of poems entitled New Beginnings. The book contains 22 spiritual poems that include many that are from experiences that Hughes encountered in her own life.

“It is a dream that has come true,” said Hughes. “I have always had a desire to publish my poems. New Beginnings is full of inspiration, encouragement, and motivation that will reach to the depths of your soul. It is simply a book of love, God’s love.”

Hughes said that each poem contains a scriptural reference, a journal prompt for self-reflection, and the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Hughes is a lifetime resident of Hampton, VA with a bachelor of science in business education degree. From 1996 to 2001, she was an instructional assistant for special education students. In 2001, she was elevated to a business teacher position. Realizing a desire to further her education, she attended Christopher Newport University, graduating in December 2003 with a master of arts in teaching (MAT) with a concentration in language arts.
