HCS initiates volleyball competition in middle schools

School year 2021-2022 marked the first year that Hampton City Schools offered intramural volleyball among the middle schools. Approximately 200 students participated. All eight middle schools had at least one team this year with a total of eight girls teams and three boys teams.

The school teams participated with each other in five regular season games and a volleyball tournament that began February 9. Semifinals were held February 14 and finals on February 16.

Both the girls and boys teams from Ann H. Kilgore Gifted Center won their first two sets against Phenix PreK-8 School and were named champions.

“Middle school sports provide health, social and emotional benefits to include weight control, problem solving, self-esteem, academic achievement and social skills,” said Beth Mair, coordinator of athletics and drivers education for Hampton City Schools. “We are so excited to offer volleyball to our middle school students this year and look forward to offering other opportunities in future school years.”
