Kelly Dee named Virginia Music Educators Association Outstanding Administrator

Kelly Dee, Hampton City Schools curriculum leader for visual and performing arts, was named the 2025 VMEA Outstanding Administrator at the Virginia Music Educators Association Conference. This recognition, one of the highest honors in music education leadership across the Commonwealth of Virginia, is for administrators whose vision, dedication, and support set the highest standards for excellence in music education. Teachers and colleagues recommended Dee for the award.

“It was my honor and privilege to recommend Mr. Kelly Dee for the Outstanding Administrator Award,” said Lisa Farrell, Eaton Middle School band director. “He is truly the ideal candidate for such recognition, as he encompasses every aspect of what makes a wonderful leader in music education. He has paved the way for not only massive change within the Hampton City Schools district in his 15 years as the visual and performing arts curriculum leader and teacher specialist for music education, but also across the country and beyond. His experience, knowledge, passion for the arts and genuine care and drive to bring out the best in his teachers and students is incomparable. His dedication to the improvement of music education is truly selfless and we are extremely blessed by his leadership.”

From clearing obstacles to student participation in music classes to setting expectations for excellence across all school music programs, Dee has led with the belief that all students deserve outstanding arts classes.

“I am humbled and grateful for this recognition. Student participation in high-quality music education programs can make young people better learners, citizens, and human beings as they work collaboratively to become creative problem-solvers and contributors to society,” said Dee. “I am proud to work with teachers, administrators, and our community to provide these opportunities for all.”
