Student-created films continue to earn awards

Hampton City Schools began a partnership with Next Generation Storytellers led by screen actors Jacob Young and Trent Garrett in 2023. The students worked alongside Hollywood actors, producers, directors, and other cast and crew to write, act, and produce high-quality short films as a part of Next Generation Storytellers. Two film festivals were held, one in 2023 at the American Theatre and one in 2024 at the Ferguson Center for the Arts.

Since these film festivals, Next Generation Storytellers has been submitting the student films to film festivals around the world. Recently, the films Omelet Sunday, Until Daylight Comes, and Click earned awards from the IndieX Film Fest and the LA Film & Documentary Awards, both held in Los Angeles, CA.

IndieX Film Fest

- Omelet Sunday: Winner for “Best Parody Short”

- Until Daylight Comes: Finalist for “Best Drama Short” & “Best Student Director (female)”

- Click: Semifinalist for “Best Drama Short” & “Best Student Director (male)”

LA Film & Documentary Awards

- Until Daylight Comes: Winner for “Best Short Film”

Garrett shared that these films are not being submitted just for student categories, but they are winning in categories that are open to all ages and industry pros.
