Delegate Jeion Ward visits Phoebus High School students
Delegate Jeion Ward, representative of the House of Delegates for the 87th District, visited Phoebus High School on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, and met with approximately 50 students from the Virginia Peninsula Community College Academy of the College Experience.
During her visit, Delegate Ward discussed how important community and civic engagement is. She advised students how vital their voice is and how much their voice matters, even now, in high school. Delegate Ward informed the students of ways they can become more involved in their community and how they can use their voice, as well as how they can even access their representatives regarding concerns in their community or regarding a bill/legislation. She also emphasized the importance of registering to vote and voting.
Delegate Ward discussed the Bill to Law process in the Virginia General Assembly, and how she often collaborates with Senator Mamie Locke. Delegate Ward outlined what one day might look like for her during a session. She demonstrated the decorum used on the floor of the House of Delegates. Students had the opportunity to engage in a role play through questions and responses, as well as debate to gain an in-depth understanding of the process.
When responding to student questions, Delegate Ward expressed her love for teaching. She so graciously advised students that everything she has done, from childhood to now has prepared her for what she does. She explained that every experience has impacted the 20 years she has served in the House of Delegates. In closing, Delegate Ward expressed the importance of not giving up.
