Bethel High - New Science Wing & New Traffic Patterns

Bethel High School broke ground on an exciting new project—a 40,000+ square-foot science wing that will house 16 state-of-the-art science classrooms once complete. Click here to view the proposed plans for the new science wing.

We acknowledge this is a big project and may cause some inconvenience for Phenix PreK-8 School and Bethel High School during construction. We ask for your patience, partnership, and understanding as we work through this exciting addition to Bethel.

For the safety of our students, faculty, and visitors, while under construction, new traffic patterns will begin on the first day of school for Phenix and Bethel and remain until construction is completed.

As such, please note the following important changes below that will begin on Monday, August 25:

Bethel High School

  • The main entrance and security desk will remain in its normal location. All parents and visitors must enter the building through the main entrance.
  • During morning arrival and afternoon dismissal, ONLY BUSES will be permitted to use the service road and enter the lot on the main entrance side of the building.
  • Parking is NOT permitted on the service road adjacent to the main entrance at any time. The service road must remain unobstructed for construction, deliveries, emergency vehicles, school buses, and maintenance access.
  • During morning arrival and afternoon dismissal, all student drivers and parent drop-offs/pick-ups must enter from Burton Street (auditorium entrance side).
    • Staff and student parking will be designated on the side of the building adjacent to the Allen Iverson Gymnasium.
    • Student drivers and parent drop-offs must enter the building via the auditorium/cafeteria hallway entrance located directly in front of the student parking lot.
  • The traffic light at Big Bethel Road and Burton Street will remain a right-hand turn ONLY for traffic leaving Bethel High (towards Todds Lane).
    • Must turn left out of the student/staff parking lot onto Burton Street to get to the traffic light.
  • Traffic leaving Bethel that needs to travel left on Big Bethel Road (towards Hampton Roads Center Parkway):
    • Must turn right out of the student/staff parking lot and travel the loop around Phenix PreK-8 School to the back of the school.
    • Exit through the gate onto Grays Landing (Michaels Woods neighborhood).
    • Make a right on Decesare Drive or Pelchat Drive to Michaels Woods Drive (which brings you to Big Bethel Road).
    • Do NOT travel past Phenix on the service road toward Bethel High.

Phenix PreK-8 School

  • Parent/Student drop-off and pick-up should not use the service road past Phenix toward Bethel High School after 6:50 AM during morning arrival or after 2:05 PM in the afternoon.

    • Individuals will need to exit through Grays Landing (Michaels Woods neighborhood).
    • Families should then turn right onto Decesare Drive or Pelchat Drive to reach Michaels Woods Drive, which leads to Big Bethel Road.

Bethel and Phenix

The Grays Landing (Michaels Woods neighborhood) gate will be open:

  • Morning Arrival: 6:50 AM – 8:30 AM
  • Afternoon Dismissal: 2:05 PM – 4:00 PM

The gate is for EXITING ONLY. Entry from Grays Landing into either school campus will be prohibited.

Again, we acknowledge that shifting all Bethel faculty, student drivers, and parent drop-off and pick-up to the auditorium/gym side of Bethel High will present inconveniences. However, the outcome of this temporary situation will be a new, innovative, and beautiful science wing.

As we adjust, we have partnered with the Hampton Police Division for recommendations and suggestions in the development of these new traffic patterns. Please know we will continue to evaluate our arrival and dismissal procedures. If any changes are needed, we will communicate those changes to our students and families.
