HCS students participate in summer career academy camps at Virginia Peninsula Community College

Hampton City Schools’ (HCS) high school students had the opportunity to participate in the summer career academy camps at Virginia Peninsula Community College (VPCC) (formerly Thomas Nelson Community College). HCS had the unique opportunity to assist in the recruitment and planning to ensure its focus aligned with the HCS mission and vision, working alongside our community partners (VPCC, The Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS), and the Virginia Grant Space Consortium at Old Dominion University).

Students from the HCS Media Arts and Design Academy and the Digital Video Production Academy participated in the Creative Studies Summer Camp. It gave students the opportunity to learn how to create multimedia and graphics, design projects, develop creative career presentations, and learn resume writing and preparation for real-world applications. They also toured the campus and had conversations with various professors about courses of study and met with the disability resource office.

Students from various academies with careers engaging drones had the opportunity to participate in the Drone Camp. Students were offered an early start at career exploration in preparation for adult life and college connections. This camp covered job exploration in unmanned systems, taught important safety and regulatory information for drone operators, and taught basic maneuvers. Students flew the DJI Tello drones outside and inside through an obstacle course. As a culmination activity, students visited Nauticus, which currently hosts a drone exhibit. They flew drones in the Drone Zone and toured the USS Wisconsin.

“This was a great experience for our students,” said Sherry Hildebrandt, HCS transition specialist. “Both camps helped students gain self confidence while learning additional life and vocational skills.”

At the conclusion of the drone camps, students were presented their earned FAA Trust certification required for all recreational pilots and their own drone to take home and practice safe flight.
