Hampton High School - building pathways to high-wage careers
Hampton High School is proud to announce that five students have officially accepted welding positions with Newport News Shipbuilding—a powerful demonstration of the strength of our skilled trades pipeline and the real-world impact of our academy model.
The following students have secured employment with projected start dates:
-
Aden Bessinger (June)
-
Austin Vincent (August)
-
Amir Rice (September)
-
Josiah Pugh (TBD)
-
Justice Holloway (TBD)
These students will enter the workforce earning a competitive starting wage of $28.69 per hour, reflecting both their high level of preparation and the strong demand within the maritime and skilled trades industry. Additional hiring decisions are anticipated in the coming weeks.
This milestone builds on the broader success of our Career and Technical Education programs. To date, nine Hampton High School students have earned industry-recognized certifications in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) and Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), and are currently advancing toward Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) and Certified Welder – Pipe credentials.
In addition, the nine students enrolled in the electrician pathway have earned their NCCER and Level 1 Residential Electrical certifications this semester and are actively progressing toward the Level 2 Commercial Electrical certification.
Several students are also awaiting decisions from The Apprentice School, as they consider opportunities that combine advanced training with long-term career growth.
“This partnership continues to exemplify the power of community-connected learning, ensuring that students graduate not only with a diploma, but with a direct pathway to high-wage, high-demand careers,” said Dr. Sean Callender, director of secondary schools. “This is another example of how Hampton City Schools prepares all students for success in careers, lifelong learning and life.”
