HCS is recognized by Cognia Excellence in STEM Education
Hampton City Schools was selected for the Cognia Excellence in STEM Education for its strong, systemwide commitment to ensuring all students have access to high-quality STEM education. The division has demonstrated a clear vision for STEM integration, emphasizing real-world application, interdisciplinary learning, and equitable opportunities for every learner. Through strategic leadership, intentional programming, and a focus on continuous improvement, Hampton City Schools is creating learning environments where students are empowered to think critically, solve complex problems, and engage meaningfully in STEM disciplines.
Dr. Myra Sawyers, Virginia State director for Cognia, presented the division with the award at the April 1, 2026, School Board meeting.
Cognia’s Excellence in STEM Education recognition highlights school systems that demonstrate a deep and sustained commitment to high-quality STEM learning, grounded in rigorous standards, innovative practices, and continuous improvement. This recognition is awarded to districts that intentionally design and implement STEM experiences that are engaging, equitable, and aligned to preparing students for future college and career opportunities.
