Dr. Towuanna Porter Brannon of Thomas Nelson Community College and Jason Mitchell of city of Hampton Public Works Division VSBA Business Honor Roll honorees

Upon nomination through a Resolution from the Hampton School Board, Dr. Towuanna Porter Brannon, president of Thomas Nelson Community College and Jason Mitchell, director of the city of Hampton Public Works Division were recognized by the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) Business Honor Roll.

Both recipients received a letter and certificate from VSBA and were recognized by the Hampton School Board at a School Board meeting on Wednesday, May 4, 2022.

Local businesses - large and small, corporate-owned or family-run - play a key role in supporting our communities and local schools. They have the power to shape community attitudes about public schools.

The VSBA Business Honor Roll is a way for local school divisions to recognize these local businesses for their support and to say “thank you” for their vital contributions.

Thomas Nelson Community College has become an integral partner in the transformation of teaching and learning in Hampton City Schools. Through their partnership, HCS has steadily increased dual enrollment offerings, instructors, and opportunities as well as the number of college credits earned by our students. Since 2015, our students have earned 19,816 dual enrollment credits, saving our students and families over $3 million in Virginia Community College System tuition. In 2021, the Academy of the College Experience’s first four-year cohort graduated 26 students with an associate’s degree. On May 16, 2022, 34 ACE students from the class of 2022 will be graduating with their associate’s degree.

In addition, last summer Thomas Nelson worked alongside the Academies of Hampton to create a dual enrollment 2021 summer opportunity that introduced rising 10th graders to college as an option while taking a college credit class on a college campus. The summer immersion experience provided a college orientation, access to campus resources, scaffolded learning experiences, and support to keep the student's success at the core of the work. The generous support of Dr. Brannon and Thomas Nelson Community College helps provide support for our students and establishes that the Portrait of a Hampton Graduate is a core value in Hampton.

Brannon shared, “Thomas Nelson is incredibly proud to be your partners and we look forward to continuing innovative initiatives that ensure the excellence every day for every child, whatever it takes.”

The Public Works Division is at the heart of most road, water, and waste matters in Hampton. Public Works is separated into several major divisions, departments or services, including Engineering, Solid Waste, Streets and Roads, and Environmental Services. Public Works has become another integral partner of HCS. Specifically, during the 2021-2022 academic year, the City of Hampton Public Works coordinated and sponsored an industry tour for teachers across the division, showcased hands-on learning applications to ninth graders, participated in remediation efforts, and worked one-on-one with young adults to be prepared to successfully enter the workforce. Additionally, they are currently actively recruiting upcoming graduates of the Class of 2022 to ensure students gain full-time employment upon graduation.

Mitchell said, “On behalf of Hampton City Council, city manager Mary Bunting and her staff, we thank the Hampton School Board and your staff for the continued appreciation in the partnerships that we have.”
