HCS honors our lunch heroes

Hampton City Schools is so fortunate to have such dedicated and professional food and nutrition services (FNS) workers. Under the direction of Edwina Forrest, these individuals work to feed our students breakfast and lunch five days a week.

Between preparing healthy meals for HCS students, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, school nutrition professionals are true heroes.

On Friday, May 6, 2022, the country celebrated the 10th Annual School Lunch Hero Day! School Lunch Hero Day is a chance to showcase the difference school nutrition professionals make for every child who comes through the cafeteria.

Forrest and her staff celebrated our lunch heroes by delivering gift bags to each employee. In addition, the department is highlighting 15 school lunch heroes during the month of May. These individuals are being honored with gifts, shoutouts on school marquees and social media, and banners on the school grounds.

Even during the pandemic when many students were attending school virtually, our food and nutrition services workers were busy preparing and distributing food to our families. These individuals were out distributing meals in all kinds of weather on a daily basis. While others were totally quarantined in their homes, our lunch heroes were working diligently to make sure our students received nutritionally balanced meals.

“One of the characteristics of a hero is selflessness. I appreciate and applaud the selflessness that all of our food service staff have and continue to exhibit  (especially in dealing with the impacts of the pandemic) while serving the young people of Hampton City Schools,” said Brittany Branch, HCS chief financial officer.

We thank our school lunch heroes for providing meals and nutrition to help our students succeed in school. You are truly our heroes!
