Safe Routes to School grant provides bicycles, as well as bike safety and etiquette to HCS students

As the result of a grant from the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) federal program, Hampton City Schools was able to purchase a trailer with 20 bicycles and 15 balance bikes. Mary T. Christian Elementary School is the first HCS school to participate in the program. Through the grant, students not only learn to ride bikes, but also learn bike safety and bike etiquette.

The purpose of the SRTS program is to give students and families an avenue to develop a lifestyle of fitness through walking and biking to school.

Allen Denton, physical education teacher at Christian, states that one student remarked, “This was the best day of school ever! Because I can ride a bike now!” Denton also commented that “at dismissal, a mother came up and asked if her daughter could really ride a bike and when I told her ‘Yes, and she did great!’, the mother was so pleased as her daughter has never ridden before.”

Eric Stone, principal, commented, “Our students at MTC have loved this opportunity to ride bicycles in PE class. It is the first time for many to have this biking with helmets experience - even as 5th graders! It is great to see how quickly some of our students’ confidence levels as a biker have grown under the supervision of William Denton, our PE teacher.”
