KHS student Seymone Wells is headed to NASA Johnson Space Center for HUNCH competition

Kecoughtan High School senior Seymone Wells is a part of the Flying Sauciers, the HUNCH Culinary Challenge team at New Horizons Regional Education Center (NHREC). The team is heading to the NASA Johnson Space Center for competition. They secured their place with shrimp fajita, Mexican street corn casserole, and kickin’ brownie cookies recipes.

Nationally, 25 schools competed in this year’s HUNCH Culinary Challenge. Ten schools progressed to the finals and will compete at the NASA Johnson Space Center in April in hopes of being named as the 2022 NASA HUNCH Culinary Challenge winner.

During the competition the Flying Sauciers entrée will be judged by Johnson Food Lab personnel, industry professionals, the ISS Program Office, and astronauts for quality and taste.

They will also be rated on a required research paper and presentation video. The HUNCH Challenge winner will have their entrée processed for a quarantine meal for astronauts to enjoy prior to spaceflight.

In its 19th year, HUNCH has provided students hands-on experiences with the space agency - such as building NASA-designed parts for use by agency personnel or food for astronauts to enjoy.

The culinary program and team from Phoebus High School won the HUNCH Culinary Challenge in 2019.

We wish the best of luck to Seymone and her team!
