Lindsay Middle School counselor motivates students through empowerment summits

Lindsay Middle School counselor Derek Savage saw a need in his school and took steps to do something about it. In order to provide his students with an opportunity to gain knowledge and encouragement from people who share the same similar stories and backgrounds as they do, he developed empower summits.

“Through these summits students are poured into and pushed to their fullest potential from our amazing speakers,” said Savage. “I truly believe that seeing is one thing, but giving the students real-life, front row opportunities to hear success stories from those who can closely relate to them and their personal circumstances is very important.

Some of the summits have included:

Tommy Reamon (owner of City On My Chest, LLC)

Dr. Keith L. Curry (Dream to Achieve Foundation, Inc.)

Gemayl Johnson (The New Rebound Foundation, Inc.)

Dr. Eiesha Williamson

Carla Mahn, director of student development and counseling for Hampton City Schools, said, “Sessions like these not only give students an opportunity to hear and learn from people who look like them and have overcome barriers, they also help build student self-esteem and self-efficacy. Activities like Mr. Savage's empowerment program help students learn to make good decisions, learn resiliency, and find relevance and importance in what they are learning in school, preparing them for the future.”
