Hampton High school hosts its first Virginia Audio Student Summit

The Audio Engineering Society (AES) Hampton Roads Student Section with Hampton High School and Hampton University, hosted its first virtual Virginia Audio Student Summit on October 13 through 15, 2020.

The summit, which was open to all Hampton City Schools students and Hampton University students, included workshops from 14 professionals: engineers, sound designers, producers, writers, voice over artists, and studio owners. One notable workshop leader was Herb Trawick, co-host of Pensado’s Place (internet program). Tawic, an award-winning producer, has worked with artists such as Earth, Wind & Fire, Beyonce, and Brian McKnight. Another workshop leader was Leslie Gaston-Bird, the Governor At Large of the Audio Engineering Society and a member of the Board for the Grammys. She participated from London, England.

Wanda Mitchell, teacher at Hampton High and coordinator of the summit said, “Bringing together music professionals from across the country and beyond, students experienced the world of possibilities open to them as young musicians. Watching my students absorb the information shared was a delight!”

One attendee shared, “I found the summit informative and helpful in my journey to becoming an audio engineer.” Another participant said, “The summit was wonderful; a place where audio and avid students could hear real stories and receive advice to help us on our audio/musical journeys.”

According to Mitchell approximately 120 students participated.
