Jennifer Murray of Langley Elementary School named Virginia Symphony’s Favorite Music Teacher in Hampton Roads
Jennifer Murray, the music teacher at Langley Elementary School, has been named one of Virginia Symphony’s Favorite Music Teachers in Hampton Roads. She was nominated for the honor by the Langley Elementary parents, staff, PTA and students.
Murray’s nomination included the following statements:
“Aside from being a wonderful teacher, Jen Murray is an incredibly talented musician with a beautiful voice. She shares her talents daily with the students, and it encourages them to express themselves musically as well. My children look forward to music because of the fun activities she plans, and they are always singing songs and rhythms for us that they learned in class.”
“Her dedication to involve kids in music and art performance surpasses the average music teacher. She has put together three wonderful plays, organized yearly music concerts and brought musical instruments to kids to enhance their musical talents. She brings music alive to the kids. She has a true love for music and displays that to and through the kids.”
Murray, who holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Old Dominion University, has taught 14 years with 12 of them at Langley. She sang professionally at the Virginia Opera for 10 years.
When asked about receiving the award, Murray said, “I am overwhelmed and humbled to receive this honor from the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. I am proud to represent the music department of Hampton City Schools.”
Kelly Dee, teacher specialist for fine arts, said, "It comes as no surprise that Mrs. Murray is receiving this recognition. Her love for teaching and her commitment to her students can be seen every day in her classroom."
The Virginia Symphony will honor Murray at their concert, Saxophones and Sibelius, on Friday, March 14, at the Ferguson Center for the Arts. Her name will be printed in the playbill from March 8 through June 14 and she will be featured on the Virginia Symphony Facebook (www.facebook.com/VirginiaSymphony) page during the month of March.
