Barron Fundamental Elementary School’s Book of the Month program is both fun and educational
Barron Fundamental Elementary School has learned how to continue learning outside of the school walls through a fun and educational Book of the Month program. The program is a collaboration between classroom teachers, the reading specialist and school counselor.
Each month Alainna Paulette, the reading specialist at the school, chooses a book that exhibits a social and emotional competency. Charnita Clements, school counselor, provides lessons that incorporate the competencies covered in the book. Paulette records herself reading the book and shares it with the teachers to use in their classrooms, along with a writing prompt.
To get parents involved, a newsletter is sent home each month that discusses the book, provides vocabulary words, as well as questions to ask students.
Another fun aspect of the program is a monthly bulletin board that incorporates the social and emotional competencies and allows students to interact.
The February book, Even Superheroes Have Bad Days, focuses on self-management.
Here is what some of the students had to say about Book of the Month:
“It teaches us lessons, like to be nice to people,” said Madilyn, a third grader.
Mollie, a second grader, said, “It’s fun. We like hearing you (Paulette) read.”
Fourth grader Madison said, “We get to hear about what problem and solutions are solved in the books.”
“We get to hear different books and if we like them, we can see if they are in the library,” said fourth grader Imani. She added, “You learn lessons in the book.”

The majority of pages in our site are available in HTML format that can be deciphered by screen readers. Some documents are in Portable Document Format (PDF), which require Adobe Acrobat Reader to view.
Also, many popular browsers contain built-in accessibility tools, and there are other plug-ins that make websites more accessible.
The HCS website is designed and monitored by HCS Webmaster Vickie Carper, who serves as the gatekeeper for website content and accessibility. The Webmaster is under the direction of the Executive Director of Public Relations and Marketing, supervised by the Director of Graphics.
