HCS teachers participate in STEM training
On July 11, 2019, nine elementary and middle school teachers took part in a STEM training sponsored by the Hampton City Schools science department. Teachers learned about a variety of STEM tools that can be used in the classroom to engage students in critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and innovation using a real-world context.
After a brief introduction to the materials and potential lesson ideas, teachers were given time to investigate the tools and collaborate with each other on ways to incorporate the technology into their classrooms. Teachers learned about Bee Bots, a floor robot designed to introduce and build computational thinking. They also learned about Finches and Spheros, robots that teach computer science by providing tangible, physical representations of coding. In addition, teachers tested out LEGO WeDo 2.0. LEGO WeDo is a STEM kit that combines LEGO bricks with engaging standards-based projects in a discovery-based approach.
Teachers had the opportunity to work with Makey Makey and KEVA Planks. Using a Makey Makey kit, students can construct their own controllers, circuits, and/or sensors. KEVA Planks require students to use problem-solving, creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving in building structures. Teachers who have gone through training will have the opportunity to check out the materials from the science department for use in their classes.
Michelle Bowers, first-grade teacher at Armstrong School for the Arts, said, “The training was really great. It has my mind thinking of so many ways I can use the STEM materials in my classroom. I have found several natural connections to the science curriculum I am working on. I can’t wait to integrate these materials and see how much my kids become involved in the activities.”
Mallory Hinshaw, teacher at Eaton Fundamental Middle School said, “I really enjoyed learning how I can incorporate coding and robotics into my current lessons. As an 8th grade teacher, I am looking forward to using LEGOs during my Force and Motion unit!”

The majority of pages in our site are available in HTML format that can be deciphered by screen readers. Some documents are in Portable Document Format (PDF), which require Adobe Acrobat Reader to view.
Also, many popular browsers contain built-in accessibility tools, and there are other plug-ins that make websites more accessible.
The HCS website is designed and monitored by HCS Webmaster Vickie Carper, who serves as the gatekeeper for website content and accessibility. The Webmaster is under the direction of the Executive Director of Public Relations and Marketing, supervised by the Director of Graphics.
