Hampton Environmental Literacy Program (H.E.L.P.) teachers visit Chincoteague Bay Field Station to learn about coastal ecology
According to Erika Martin, seventh-grade science teacher at Tarrant Middle School, “There is so much to learn from the environment around us. The Chincoteague Bay Field Station provided the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the environment in the presence of helpful educators willing to answer questions. My exposure to places such as Chincoteague Bay Field Station strengthens me as an educator.”
On July 10, Martin and 24 other Hampton Environmental Literacy Program (H.E.L.P.) teachers visited the Chincoteague Bay Field Station on the Eastern Shore’s Wallops Island to investigate coastal ecology. The trip was the final teacher professional development experience for the four-year, $350,000 NOAA BWET grant.
Wallops Island is a six-square mile barrier island, south of Chincoteague, VA, where NASA’s Flight Facility launches Antares rockets to replenish supplies on the International Space Station. In the morning teachers learned about the formation, importance, and biodiversity of Virginia’s Barrier Islands. Teachers had the opportunity to see dune succession first-hand and collect shells of coastal animals, such as clams, oysters, snails, horseshoe crabs, and whelk/skate egg cases on a pristine beach. Emily Foy, Chincoteague Bay Field Station educator, shared more information about each of the species observed.
“Even though I grew up on the Eastern Shore with the water and beach being part of my life, the Chincoteague Field Station Experience still taught me new things,” said Heather Moore, science teacher at Kecoughtan High School.
In the afternoon teachers boarded a boat for a short trip on Chincoteague Bay. Teachers learned about a variety of coastal species, such as flounder, oyster toadfish, blue crab, squid, and sponge that were collected using a trawl net. Christine LaPointe, a fifth-grade teacher at Spratley Gifted Center said, “The H.E.L.P. trip to the Chincoteague Bay Field Station was outstanding. I will be able to take the information that I learned and the shells I was able to collect and use them in the classroom with my students.”
Each teacher participant will receive a field trip for 25 students with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation for the fall of 2019.

The HCS website is designed and monitored by HCS Webmaster Vickie Carper, who serves as the gatekeeper for website content and accessibility. The Webmaster is under the direction of the Executive Director of Public Relations and Marketing, supervised by the Director of Graphics.
