The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) today released data on the performance of students on Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments in reading, writing, mathematics, science, and history/social studies for the 2018-2019 school year. Hampton City Schools’ African-American student group outpaces the state in all five assessments.
Additionally in the category of reading, Hampton City Schools outperforms the state pass rates for the student groups of Economically Disadvantaged students (3 percentage points), English Learners (13 percentage points), and Hispanic students (13 percentage points).
Hampton’s Economically Disadvantaged students surpass the state in the category of math by five percentage points, as well as English Learners (16 percentage points) and Hispanic students (11 percentage points).
In the category of history/social studies, HCS Economically Disadvantaged students and Hispanic students exceed the state assessment scores by one percentage point (Economically Disadvantaged) and ten percentage points (Hispanic).
Furthermore, three additional Hampton City Schools’ student groups show higher performance than the state in the category of science: Economically Disadvantaged students (2 percentage points), English Learners (2 percentage points), and Hispanic students (12 percentage points).
“I remain confident in the work we are doing in support of ensuring equitable outcomes for all students and that we are preparing our young people to be college, career, and life ready,” said Superintendent Dr. Jeffery Smith. “We continue to expand our guaranteed, viable curriculum with a high-quality professional development program. We also continue to focus on the importance of literacy from birth to postsecondary for all students. The Standards of Learning serve as a springboard for other important credentials and skills our students need in order to be prepared for high-demand, high-waged jobs and careers. I am pleased with the students’ academic growth as measured by these standards and we will continue to build from this place of strength.”
The Virginia Board of Education revised its accreditation standards last year to provide a more comprehensive view of school quality while encouraging continuous improvement for all schools and placing increased emphasis on closing achievement gaps. The VDOE will release official ratings in September 2019.
The division’s leadership team is looking forward to the release of the detailed information in September as the accreditation model takes into consideration student growth, as well as factors in the performance of individual student groups.
Today’s data does not tell the whole story in regard to credit recovery, successful remediation efforts, and student growth. Based on preliminary results, all student groups – All Students, Asian, African American, Hispanic, White, Students with Disabilities, Economically Disadvantaged, and English Learners – show significant growth. Specifically, our Students with Disabilities show marked progress in reading and math. This data is still important for our division to analyze as our focus is on continuous improvement. However, September’s release will report more comprehensive student achievement.
