Honey bees find unlikely home at Langley Elementary School
Langley Elementary School students and staff have a new club – the Bee Club! The club consists of 12 fourth and fifth grade students who are serving as honey bee advocates for the school and the community.
Last spring, sponsor Kathy Kilgore applied for and received a Honey Bee Grant from the Bee Cause Project. The grant included educational materials, $300, and a beehive. The mission of the Bee Cause Project is to provide youth with opportunities to understand, engage, and learn from honey bees in order to connect with the natural environment while developing science, technology, engineer and math (STEAM) skills.
Kilgore said that the students have enjoyed learning about the bees and sharing their knowledge with students and staff. They have shared information on the school’s morning announcements, created posters for the hallways, planted flowers, and shared their experiences at the school’s volunteer reception.
“The favorite thing the students like to do is inspect the hive,” said Kilgore. “They get to see up close the different types of bees, honey, pollen, and the stages of the bee life cycle.”

The majority of pages in our site are available in HTML format that can be deciphered by screen readers. Some documents are in Portable Document Format (PDF), which require Adobe Acrobat Reader to view.
Also, many popular browsers contain built-in accessibility tools, and there are other plug-ins that make websites more accessible.
The HCS website is designed and monitored by HCS Webmaster Vickie Carper, who serves as the gatekeeper for website content and accessibility. The Webmaster is under the direction of the Executive Director of Public Relations and Marketing, supervised by the Director of Graphics.
