Mohammed IssaMohammed Issa of Hampton High School named 2018 Coca-Cola Scholar

Mohammed Issa, an exceptional senior at Hampton High School, has been awarded a $20,000 college scholarship by the Coca‑Cola Scholars Foundation for being one of the country’s outstanding high school leaders.  He is now a member of the 30th class of Coca‑Cola Scholars, as he exemplifies superior leadership, service, and academics, and he is a change agent, positively affecting others in his community. Issa was selected from a pool of nearly 140,000 initial applicants from across the country. 

He will attend Northwestern University in the fall and plans to study architectural engineering. Issa is captain of the Scholastic Bowl team, participates in forensics, and plays varsity soccer.  He is a student leader in SCA and an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate.  Issa has been inducted in to the National Honor Society, Art Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, and Science Honor Society.  He has volunteered numerous hours to community service such as Hampton High beautification and feeding the homeless.

The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation is a joint effort of Coca-Cola bottlers across the United States and The Coca-Cola Company.  The Foundation is one of the largest corporate-sponsored, achievement-based scholarship programs of its kind in the United States. It was established in 1986 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Coca-Cola and to bring better to the world through investment in exceptional high school students who are dedicated to leadership, service, and action that positively affects others. Including the 2018 class of Coca-Cola Scholars, the Foundation has awarded over 6,000 Coca‑Cola Scholars with a total of $65.5 million in scholarships. The Coca-Cola system believes that investing in students who are leaders, both academically and in service to others, will result in positive, lasting change and sustainable communities.

“Mohammed Issa is part of a diverse group of extraordinary high school seniors that have shown a steadfast commitment to educational excellence, leadership and service to the school and community,” said Julie Hamilton, chairman of the board of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and senior vice-president, Global Customer & Commercial Leadership, The Coca-Cola Company. “The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation is proud to name Mr. Issa as a 2018 Coca-Cola Scholar.”

On April 19, Issa will join other Coca-Cola Scholars as they travel to Atlanta, the international headquarters of The Coca-Cola Company, for Scholars Weekend. During this four-day weekend, the scholars will participate in a Leadership Development Institute to further develop their leadership skills, tour local landmarks, engage with Coca-Cola Scholars Alumni, and participate in a group community service project. The 150 Coca-Cola Scholars will also be the guests of honor at the 30th annual Scholars Banquet, where they will be celebrated by representatives from the Coca-Cola system, educators, local dignitaries, and friends of the Scholars Foundation. Sara Blakely, founder of Spanx and the Sara Blakely Foundation, will serve as the featured speaker.

As stated in School Board Policy AC, Hampton City Schools (“HCS”) does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, gender, age, disability or other protected class in its programs, activities and employment practices and provides equal access to the Boy Scouts and other designated youth groups.  HCS also prohibits retaliation under School Board Policy GBAH for the purpose of interfering with a person’s rights and/or privileges under federal civil rights laws, which can include: (i) raising concerns with Division personnel about a civil rights violation; (ii) asserting a right or advocating for the rights of a student or employee under federal civil rights laws; or (iii) participating in a complaint investigation or related proceedings. 

All individuals are encouraged to promptly report any incident they believe to be discrimination, harassment or retaliation in violation of HCS School Board Policy.  All reports should be made to the HCS Compliance Officer, who also serves as the HCS Executive Director of Human Resources.  Upon receiving a report of alleged discrimination, harassment or retaliation, the Compliance Officer shall promptly authorize an investigation into the complaint, determine whether the alleged act occurred, and determine whether any action must be taken to end or prevent further harassment, discrimination, or retaliation.  For more information about this process, please review School Board Policy GBAB-R.

SELF-MONITORING

HCS monitors all technology resource activity and requires all employees, students and individuals with access to HCS computer systems and networks to annually read and sign an Acceptable Use Policy.  See School Board Policy IIBEA for Students; School Board Policy GBBB for Employees.

Our continuing goal is for the HCS website to be accessible to individuals with disabilities in compliance with the requirements of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and that statute's implementing regulations at 34 C.F.R. Part 104, and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and that statute's implementing regulations at 28 C.F.R. Part 35.

Good faith efforts are being made to ensure that our website complies with web accessibility standards. In addition to the federal regulations above, we are actively working to conform to level AA of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0.
Prior to posting new website content, the HCS Webmaster determines if the proposed content meets the criteria of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).  Periodically the HCS Webmaster checks the website with a recognized website checker such as 508 Checker and WAVE.  If the audit identifies issues of concern or content errors that impede accessibility to any user, the concerns/errors are evaluated and remedied within a six-week period.
