Hampton City Schools projects the highest school accreditation rate in five years
State assessment results released by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) indicate students in Hampton City Schools continue to make improvements in academic achievement, as measured by the state’s accountability system. Division officials are projecting the highest accreditation rate in five years.
In 2015, 12 schools, or 41 percent of schools, earned full accreditation. Last year, 16 schools, or 55 percent earned full accreditation. This year, HCS expects that 19 schools will be fully accredited, representing 66 percent of schools. All four high schools are projected to be fully accredited. Seven schools are partially accredited.
“I am pleased with the exceptional progress toward all of our schools being fully accredited,” said Superintendent Dr. Jeffery Smith. “This is representative of a strong working relationship with our families and a committed and dedicated HCS staff. We will continue our efforts to ensure that our young people not only exceed state benchmarks, but are also college, career and life-ready.”
Students at 13 schools posted gains on the Standards of Learning (SOL) tests in English and in mathematics. Students at 17 schools posted gains in social studies, and students at 14 schools posted gains in science.
The overall SOL pass rates for the past four years indicate an increase in student achievement. In English, 67 percent of students passed the test four years ago; 76 percent passed the test in 2017. In writing, 65 percent passed four years ago; 69 percent passed this year. In mathematics, the amount passing increased from 69 to 75 percent in four years. The science scores increased from 73 percent to 75 percent this year; and history and social science scores improved from 80 percent passing to 82 percent passing.
At the beginning of the 2015-16 school year, the school division implemented an intense accreditation plan of action, which includes a system of differentiated support to schools based on the assessment data. Furthermore, the division added a literacy program that focuses on literacy development from birth to postsecondary. The Division has also worked to enhance the curriculum and better align the assessment program with the curriculum.
At the secondary level, HCS expanded dual enrollment and industry certification programs. In fact, the dual enrollment credit hours in HCS increased 430 percent between the 2015-16 and 2016-17 school years. During the 2015-16 school year, students took 518 credit hours through the HCS dual enrollment program. During the 2016-17 school year, students took 2,745 credit hours.
The Division also expects the expansion of high school academies will enrich students’ learning experiences and place them in a more competitive position with their peers.
The Virginia Department of Education assigns school accreditation ratings that reflect student achievement on SOL tests and other approved assessments in English, history/social science, mathematics and science. The VDOE will release official ratings in September.
