Two elementary counseling programs receive national recognition 

The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) is pleased to announce Jane H. Bryan and Samuel P. Langley elementary schools as Recognized ASCA Model Programs (RAMP). The RAMP designation recognizes schools that are committed to delivering an exemplary school counseling program. Honorees are awarded for aligning their program with the criteria in the ASCA National Model, a framework for a data-informed school counseling program. Since the program’s inception, more than 1,000 schools earned the RAMP designation. Research findings indicate that fully implemented school counseling programs are associated with a range of positive student educational and behavioral outcomes.

“Hampton City Schools counselors attended a two-year training on the ASCA National Model. School counselors Kara Hart of Bryan Elementary and Sheila Barnhart-Ramirez of Langley Elementary have taken what they learned during that two-year process to not only ensure that their school counseling programs are beneficial to their students and families, but also model school counseling programs for others to use as a roadmap,” said Carla Mahn, Hampton City Schools director of student development and counseling. “Achieving RAMP status takes a lot of dedication, commitment, and documentation. They have worked hard over the past year and a half to develop and implement school counseling programs that meet the varying needs and demographics of their student population and that support the mission of Hampton City Schools.”

“This year’s RAMP honorees have shown their commitment to students and the school counseling profession,” said Jill Cook, ASCA executive director. “These schools used data to drive their program development and implementation so all students can achieve success. The RAMP designation distinguishes these schools and encourages school counselors nationwide to strive for excellence.”

 

Both Bryan and Langley elementary schools, will be honored at a recognition ceremony at ASCA’s annual conference in Kansas City, Mo., on July 15, 2024.
