HCS participates in Virginia Kindness Week

The second week of February has been designated by the Virginia Department of Education as Kindness Week, a time to “recognize that simple day-to-day acts of kindness enable our schools, communities, and state to be a kinder, safer, healthier and more inclusive place to live, work, learn and play” (VDOE, 2024). During this week, several Hampton City Schools (HCS) students and staff members were nominated by school counselors and recognized by the Virginia Department of Education as Ambassadors of Kindness.

Hampton City Schools recognized Ambassadors of Kindness are Burbank Elementary School student Aiden Shaheen; Andrews PreK-8 School students Jazmyn Nicole Bell and Gabriel Santiago; Machen Elementary School learning recovery facilitator Stacey Henderson-Gomes; and Kecoughtan High School academy principal Dr. Sharmaine Grove. These ambassadors were surprised with a certificate from the Virginia Department of Education.

“Acts of kindness boosts feelings of confidence, optimism, and happiness,” shared Carla Mahn, HCS director of student development and counseling. “They also encourage others to repeat the kindness that they have experienced. This contributes to a more positive community and learning environment for everyone. These individuals are role-models to us all.”
